In December, Pat Rose and her crew were awarded the Remodeling in Excellence award for kitchen remodeling projects under $30,000 for 2010. The award was presented by the Whatcom County Builders Association at their annual installation and awards banquet.
The clients purchased this small single story home as their retirement home. The kitchen was poorly designed with the free standing stove blocking counter and cabinet access and the microwave taking up valuable counter space. The refrigerator extended past the side wall, there was no dishwasher and essentially no range venting; in addition the lighting was inadequate!
We re-designed the kitchen to have a new range located on the back wall, allowing usable counter space on each side and an efficient work triangle with the sink and refrigerator. We were able to provide custom cabinets at a price only slightly higher than lower quality pre-fabricated cabinets. The client wanted a classic look to match the homes overall 1930’s cottage style and the white painted cabinets with inset beaded panels and mullioned glass doors with glass pulls fit the bill nicely.
A space efficient microwave-vent hood combination was installed above the range and vented to the outside through the attic. The wall was extended to enclose the refrigerator and a dishwasher was plumbed and installed next to the sink. New recessed can lights and Zenon under cabinet lights were installed and a central ceiling mount light fixture was added to keep the classic look. To complete the new lighting the client found a beautiful pendant light at a discounted price which we installed over the sink. The new lighting achieved excellent tak and overall lighting fo the workspace, with classic styling details that enhanced the entire project within a reasonable budget.
